Cherie Norene Paige, age 76, passed away at home on February 9, 2020, after a six-year battle with bone cancer. She was surrounded by her husband, Dr. Roger Paige, of 59 years, her daughter Terra Baugh, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, brothers, and friends. Cherie was born on July 26, 1943 in Independence, MO, to Gerald and Doris Gabriel. She has resided in Joplin since 1976.

Cherie was a Psychologist and loved working at Carl Junction High School as a Counselor for 19 years where she gained many lasting friendships. Roger and Cherie were the co-founders of College Skyline Counseling Center, which Cherie managed for many years. She enjoyed spending time at their cabin playing Mexican train dominoes with friends. She loved making needlepoint blankets for her grandchildren, playing numerous card games, and hanging with her dog.

The family would like to thank Dr. David Croy of Mercy Hospital in Joplin, and Dr. Carolina Schinke of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences for extending Cherie’s life. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Joplin Humane Society.

A Memorial Service for Cherie will be held at Mason Woodard Mortuary at 10 am on February 15, 2020. The family will receive friends at a time of visitation following the service. A Pot Luck Reception will be held immediately following the visitation at College Skyline Center, 1230 N. Duquesne.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.

When I first met Cherie at the beginning of 1969, she looked just like these beautiful pictures, and she remained a beauty all of her life. At that time, Cherie was the assistant to Dean Folks in the College of Agriculture, and I was in the office next to her where I advised the students.

We became fast friends. Then Cherie began inviting Joe and I over to her home. I kept putting her off, thinking our husbands would never get along. Joe was a "jock" majoring in Physical Education who wore jeans, while Roger was a Ph.D. candidate in Psychology who was a "pretty boy" who wore white leather shoes, a white leather belt, and polyester pants. She invited us so many times that I finally told Joe we were going to have to go because Cherie was so good to me and that he'd just have to be nice even though he probably wouldn't have anything in common with Roger.

Well, that first evening with Roger and Cherie in their basement apartment on Stewart in Columbia, Missouri, was the beginning of a lifelong friendship. Roger and Joe made an instant connection and became the best of friends, who fished together often (even though Roger seemed quite jealous of Joe's tackle box that was so big and full of fishing stuff that he asked Joe if he could take a picture of it because Cherie would never believe anyone could have that many lures). We played cards and games together and continued to visit Cherie and Roger in Trenton when he finished that Ph.D. and taught at the community college there. We made many visits to Trenton, where we spent many weekends and holidays. That big, old house in Trenton gave me a great love for big, old houses! Terra gave up her cute loft bed to us many times. Terra's love for Joe even got him into a Santa Claus suit one Christmas!

When the Paige family moved on to Joplin, we were in Kansas so we were able to continue seeing other, although it wasn't as often. As so often happens, we moved on to Illinois and eventually wound up in Arizona, where we've been for 33 years. Although we never lost touch with each other, there were years that went by and we didn't see each other. In the last few years, we've made a few trips to Missouri and were able to reconnect in person. As with real friendships, we just seemed to pick up where we left off and were able to talk and share as if we'd been seeing each other all these years that we'd been apart. I'm so glad I was able to meet Tessa when she came out to Arizona to check out med schools. I'm so happy I was able to see Terra and again and meet her wonderful husband, Wes, and spend time with them in Branson. I'm so grateful for the Paige family. I've learned so much because of the love and devotion I've seen Cherie and Roger faithfully give each other. It is rare to find a bond so strong between two people as that of Roger and Cherie.

I never knew before now that it could hurt so much to lose a friend, and I am so grateful to have loved and been loved by Cherie so much that I feel this way even if it is so very painful. Cherie and her family will always have a special place in my heart. Joe and I wish we could be with you right now. Bless you at this difficult time and always. Love you so much.
