Obituary for Shelly Christina Goerz

Shelly Christina Goerz, age 62, of Joplin, passed away on Thursday November 3, 2022,
at Mercy Hospital, following a sudden illness.

Shelly was born on May 2, 1960, in Lincoln, NE. Her parents were Melvin and Mary
(Abernathy) Goerz. She graduated from Henderson High School in Henderson, NE, a
member of the class of “1978”. She received an associate degree in Public Health from
Anderson College in Anderson, IN. She moved to the Joplin area in 2001 and very
quickly made Joplin her home. She embraced the community and became very involved
in volunteer work.

Shelly was an avid crafter, Nebraska Huskers fan, talented cook, and doting mother to
many fur babies. Shelly was a stranger to no one she encountered and found great
purpose sharing in the successes, joys, and challenges of those around her. Shelly was
authentically and wholeheartedly there for those in her life.
Shelly loved the Lord and found a true church home at the Joplin Family Worship
Center. She began every morning with bible study, worship, and reflection. She shared
daily devotions with the community via Facebook. “Front Porch Prayers From 530” will
be missed by many.

She worked as a Volunteer Coordinator for Avalon Hospice. This was the perfect
position for Shelly as she was able to serve individuals and families during a fragile
point in time in their lives. She provided great comfort to those she served. Shelly
genuinely loved each and every client. Prior to that, she worked for The Independent
Living Center. She considered colleagues from both organizations as part of her
extended family.

Shelly was a longtime member of Soroptimist International of Joplin. She looked forward
to serving at Camp Soroptimist annually. She was often the first to volunteer when
opportunities presented themselves. She met several of her best friends through her
work with Soroptimist.

Shelly was a foster pet parent for the Joplin Humane Society. She was very active in the
Building Bridges program locally. Her volunteer activities and acts of individual kindness
are too numerous to mention.

Shelly was preceded in death by both of her parents. She missed them terribly. Shelly is
survived by her brother, Tim Goerz, Kingwood, TX; her two fur babies; and a large circle
of close friends.

In her memory, donations can be made to the Joplin Humane Society or Soroptimist
International of Joplin.

A Memorial service will be held on Monday, November 14, at 6:30 pm at the Joplin
Family Worship Center.
