Obituary for Carol Sterley (Martin)

Carol Vernice Sterley, 87, 2853 East LaMonta Drive Springfield Missouri, returned to her Heavenly Father, Monday, December 21st, 2020, after several health challenges.

Born Carol Vernice Martin to Vernon Henry and Emma Caroline (Schuler) Martin August 29th, 1933, in Sullivan MO. She married Alvin Sterley on April 29th, 1967, in Leslie MO. They moved to Joplin MO in 1970 where they remained until Al’s passing in 1997 and Carol’s move to Springfield MO in 2018. Carol was employed with Larry Hickey Distributing Company from 1970 until her retirement in 2000. She and Al were Youth Bowling Coordinators for Carl Richard’s 4th Street Bowl and members of the Joplin Elk’s Lodge #501. Both were inducted into the Greater Joplin USBC Bowling Hall of Fame in 1998.

Post retirement, Carol turned to volunteering. She volunteered time with American Rehabilitation Ministry Inc. with other friends. Most of her spare time was spent volunteering for the Freeman Cancer Center and Freeman Heart Institute. She was recognized for her volunteerism when she received the Missouri Lieutenant Governor’s Senior Service Award. Carol enjoyed helping others and never did anything to bring attention or recognition to herself.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Emma Martin, brothers James and Vernon Lee Martin. She is survived by Joseph Malone (son) and wife Sue Temecula CA, Brett Sterley (son) and wife Denise Springfield MO, granddaughter Stacy Galang and husband Jay Temecula CA, grandson Trevor Sterley Springfield MO, step-grandson Doug Scott Baxter Springs KS and step-granddaughter Shelley Willits Hurricane UT, brother Warren Martin and wife Linda of Kansas City MO, eight great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, eight nieces and nephews and additional family and friends who touched her life.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 28, 2020 at Mason-Woodard Mortuary, Pastor Steve Bycroft officiating. Family will receive friends during a time of visitation beginning at 1:00 p.m. until service time.

Contributions in Carol’s memory can be made to Villa Heights Christian Church, in care of Mason-Woodard Mortuary.
