Obituary for Rev. Robert L. Hendrix, Sr.
Reverend Robert Louis Hendrix Sr., 89, of Grove, Oklahoma, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at his home in Grove. He died of natural causes.
Reverend Hendrix was born July 5, 1931 in Ocean City, Maryland to Reverends Eschol and Mary Ruth Hendrix. He was married to Mary Lou Allen, May 14, 1950 at the Scotland Church of God, East of Duenweg, Missouri. They were happily married for over 70-years. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou, three daughters, Kay Brock, (Carl) Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Vickie Butler (Mike), Grove, Oklahoma, Tammy Oxendine (Jim), Diamond, Missouri, and Reverend Robert Hendrix Jr, Satanta, KS, one sister, Iris Curtis (Bill), Granite City, Illinois, nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. He was a graduate from Carthage High School in Carthage Missouri in 1949.
Reverend Hendrix pastored for over 50 years, including the four Church of God’s in SW Missouri, Scotland Church of God, First Church of God, Granby, Missouri (twice), Southside Church of God, Joplin, Missouri, and the Grand Avenue Church of God, Carthage, Missouri. He also pastored the First Church of God in Chanute, Kansas. He attended Gulf Coast Bible College, Houston, Texas in the mid 70’s as a pastoral student. He was also an architect at Goodman Church Builders, Joplin, Missouri.
Reverend Hendrix was preceded in death by his parents, Eschol and Mary Hendrix, one daughter, Baby Sue Hendrix, three brothers, Carol Hendrix and Don Hendrix, both were ordained ministers, Eschol Ray Hendrix and a sister, Louis Lee Hendrix.
Reverend Hendrix was fond of fellowshipping with anyone claiming Christ as their Savior. He was a third generation ordained Church of God (Anderson, IN) minister. He also enjoyed playing ping-pong and listening to Christian music, preferable Southern Gospel, and would occasionally sing in choirs at the churches he attended over the years. He was a mentor to many younger pastors and considered a father figure to many people. He was known for his humility, compassion, his love for the Lord, the church, and his family. He was a loyal and trustworthy friend to many.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mary Lou Hendrix and the Hendrix Family in care of the mortuary.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. Burial will follow at Stone Cemetery near Diamond, MO. The family will receive friends during a time of visitation from 6 to 7 Monday evening at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be grandsons Shane Kissel, Matt Kissel, B.J. Oxendine, Cody Kidd, Tyler Kidd, and Don Kidd. Honorary pallbearers, Gene Davison, Donald Loop, and John Johnson.
