Obituary for Dorothy Virginia Wood (Collings)
Dorothy Virginia Wood, age 97, of Joplin, passed away on Thursday, January 2, 2020 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin. Mrs. Wood, daughter of the late Grover Joseph and Josie Marie (Chambers) Collings, was born on April 25, 1922, in Jasper County. She attended school and graduated from Duenweg High School. She then continued her education and graduated from Joplin Business College. On September 22, 1942 in Webb City, she was united in marriage to William Eugene Wood. Together they raised three children. Dorothy was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Joplin and enjoyed singing in the choir. Dorothy was an avid bridge player, loved to travel and spend time with her family. She always had a welcoming smile that greeted her friends.
Survivors include one son, Larry Wood of Joplin; one daughter, Sharon Godfrey, and her husband, John, of Carl Junction; four grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one son, William Wood; and two brothers, William Joseph Collings and Chester Collings.
Funeral services will be held Monday, January 6, 2020 at 2:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church in Joplin with Reverend Roger Nichols officiating. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation starting at 1:00 pm until service time at the church on Monday.
