Obituary for Ethel Elizabeth Bruffy

Ethel Elizabeth Bruffy, age 98, of Joplin, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2019 at the Joplin Gardens in Joplin. Ethel, daughter of the late Samuel and Verna (Hoffman) Snell, was born on May 16, 1921 in Pottsville, PA. She attended school in Philadelphia, PA. In 1938 she was united in marriage to Lawrence Bruffy II in Elkton, Maryland. Lawrence was a WWII Veteran and Ethel was a proud military wife for nine years. Together they moved to Pittsburg, KS in 1945. Lawrence preceded her in death in 1972 and in 1977 she moved to Joplin in 1977 to make her home. Ethel was employed as a nurse’s aid for the former St. John’s hospital in Joplin and enjoyed crocheting and reading.

Survivors include one son, Lawrence Bruffy III, and his wife, Theresa, of Joplin, and their children, Bill Bruffy, and his wife, Shannon, and Christy Ladish, and her husband, Tom, great grandchildren, Billy Bruffy, Emily Bruffy, and Kendall Lewis; one daughter, Verna Williams, and her children, Mark Reeder, and his significant other, DeWanna, and Kimberley Evans, with great-grandchildren, David Simpson, Marcus Reeder, Tori Longan, and her husband, Drew, Michelle Mikel, and her husband, Erikson, Jeremiah Box, and his wife, Kristen, Katie Spitz, and her husband, Courtney, and MacKinley Evans; and 10 great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one grandson, Mike Reeder; two great-grandsons, Stevie Ray Box and Corey Box; and one brother Harry Snell.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, July 16, 2019 at 1:00 pm at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary in Joplin. Inurnment will be held at a later date at the Mt. Hope Cemetery in Webb City. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and may be entrusted to the mortuary.
