Walter Grant Howrey, 75, of Jasper, Missouri WALKED into the arms of Jesus on January 28, 2019 in Joplin, Missouri.

Services will be held Thursday, January 31, at First Christian Church in Lamar, Missouri at 11:00 am, officiated by Terry Bowland, brother-in-law and friend.

Walter was born in Lake City, Iowa to Floyd and Beulah Howrey on November 8, 1943. He earned diplomas at Rockwell City High School, Ozark Bible College, and Fort Hays State University. He married his high school sweetheart, Cindy McCarty, on April 5, 1966 in Rockwell City, Iowa. He shared his love of the gospel by ministering in many small towns throughout the midwest for 40 years. A paraplegic for more than decade, he didn’t let his disability stop him from tackling life. He willingly tilled any garden in exchange for a watermelon, chopped wood and kept a large garden, sweet talked the church ladies into homemade pies, and made a habit of parking his wheelchair at Heavenly Delights Donuts in Lamar, Missouri. If he set his mind to something, he would do it -- whether he should or not, would bring home anything if the “price was right,” and thought grounding prongs were for sissies.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Beulah Howrey.

Walter is survived by his wife of 52 years, Cindy Howrey, daughters Melissa Fulton (Lance), Jennifer Diggs (Mark Logan), and Becky Liscombe (Todd), sisters Colleen Wood, Linda Fiscus, and brother David Howrey (Judy), grandchildren Erin Fulton, Emily Diggs, Isaac Diggs, Kaylynn Liscombe, Audrey Diggs, and Grant Liscombe.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Haitian Christian Outreach,, or Rapha House,

Dear Cindy: I am so very sorry to hear of Walter's passing. I just did learn of this yesterday. I feel badly I was not at his funeral. He was a good friend of the Probert family and was thought very highly of by us all. I am so sorry for your loss. Please know you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. With deepest sympathy, Jane Probert Isenmann Jasper MO

Debbie and I did not know Walt for that many years but always found him to be likely in the BEST of spirit of anyone in church on any given day. Strong personality but one who did not focus on himself but rather the lives of others. I do seem to remember at an elder meeting a few years back that we needed to fill a teaching position that had become vacant. Walt's name popped up and we thought with his disability we did not want to "strap him" to the podium very long so as not to wear him out...after all, he was "RETIRED". We were all blessed to see Walt just keep going and going and going in teaching that class. My 91 year old Mother really enjoyed his teaching and we all know he will be missed. Once we saw Walt at the local hospital and before we knew it, he was talking with another person in a wheelchair comparing notes on their "rides" but you could also tell the groundwork was being laid to share his witness. I thank The LORD for Walt and his zeal to let others hear The Good News! I know he is no longer bound by that wheelchair and his spirit is soaring! Kent & Debbie Harris First Christian Church Lamar

To the family of Mr. Howery: I didn't know Mr. Howery, yet reading his obit tells me he was quite a guy. I am a minister and would like to offer some comfort from God's word. We can see at 2 Cor 1:3,4 that God offers to comfort us in our time of need. He does this through his word, his people and through the privilege of prayer. The bible offers us the beautiful hope of seeing our loved ones again in the resurrection, right here on earth. What a beautiful promise from our loving God. I pray that you will have the comfort to make it through each day as it comes along for time is a healer.
