MSGT James Marvin Gess RET.

James Marvin Gess, "Uncle Bubby," age 88, of Joplin, passed away on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at National Health Care in Joplin. Mr. Gess, son of the late James and Mamie Rebah (Gaddy) Gess, was born on June 18, 1930 in Bend, Or. Marvin was raised and grew up working with his grandfather and uncle in the woods and timber in Oregon. The family moved to the dryer Idaho climate for Marvin’s health and then opened the family restaurant in Fruitland named the Purple Sage Café. In 1952 Marvin enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he honorably and proudly served his country for 31 years retiring in 1983.

On June 17, 1959 in Caldwell, Id. Marvin chose Elnora Ann Green as his bride. During their marriage they were stationed in various areas including California and Japan. In 1982, Marvin retired to Joplin to be closer to his family. He and Elnora enjoyed many years of traveling all over North America and to the east and west coast to visit family. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting and watching old westerns.

Survivors include his wife, Elnora Gess, of Joplin, Mo; two nieces, Jamie Ross, of Florida and Amber Gess of Carthage, Mo; six nephews, James P. Gess, Ronnie Gess, Gerald (Andy) Gess, all of Joplin, MO, Dustin Gess, of McCune, Ks, Darren L. Gess, of Vanita, Ok, and Joshua Gess, of Carthage, Mo; one sister-in-law, Jenna Gess, of Carthage; and one cousin, Marjorie Jorden, of Elizabeth, La; and numerous nieces and nephews he loved dearly. In addition to his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by one uncle, Evert Gess; two cousins, Jeane Gess and Larry Gess; and one brother, Gerald Ray Gess.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday December 20, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary in Joplin. Burial will follow at the Osborne Cemetery in Joplin.
