Levy Sirmon was my best friend while in LCA ,Auburn and for many years afterward. We were always concerned about being blackballed as Freshmen and did not make our grades first quarter. We listened to the Almond Brothers Band (his favorite at the time) and vowed to do better. After Brotherhood , we roomed in the old Dorm building of LCA. Many parties, friends ,new associates, Little Sisters and Brotherhood dominated our campus and collegiate life.
Levy saved my life at a near drowning incident in Panama City. He was also instrumental in my recovery from a near fatal car wreck when Ralph Reagan and I were returning from Florida on Easter Sunday 1976. While recovering in the hospital , many Brothers from Montgomery came by including Levy , John David, Gary Porter and Birmingham area men Alan Hume and Rusty Stokes. They all cheered me up and helped my recovery.
During my junior year, I ran for off Campus Senator. Levy was my main supporter and with his Girlfriend passed out literature , flyers and signs all around the Campus. It was my privilege to meet his parents and family over the years, visiting them in Montgomery. During our Senior year, Levy and my sister Kat dated and I remember a special Springtime Luau Party at LCA during April 1978 where they were quite the couple.
After graduation, marriages where we were each others best man, dinners, celebrations of Grad school completions and new families pulled us along. In our mid 30's ,Levy and his wife Diane were transferred from Watkinsville, Ga. to Joplin, Mo. and there they raised their 2 sons. We had all planned on attending the LCA 100 year anniversary weekend in Auburn 4/2015. He was unable to go but Traci and I went and we had one of the best times of my post Auburn life there that weekend. Especially nice was the monument in the entry in the new wing which had our Omega numbers and the initiation period. Levy and I were side by side there as we had been so often during our Auburn days.
Diane Sirmon died in 2016 at age 58 . Levy's son joined the military and was sent to Afghanistan. His older son resided with his wife in Joplin, Mo. Levy came by our home in Covington ,Ga . in 2017 and we visited that day and talked about the Past Present and Future. During Summer 2018 my youngest son Andrew (Auburn grad in 2010) had an illness and was in ICU for several weeks. Levy called me every night during this tough time praying for my son and checking on his status. Andrew recovered thanks to the many prayers and well wishers such as Levy offered.
Levy Sirmon died on 10/30/2018 from a sudden illness. He was a great man, well liked by our peers at Auburn. He was a leader in industry and personified loyalty and family. In our lifetime we are lucky if we have one or 2 people in our life like Levy and I think about him now every day. I hope he and Diane are once again reunited. I loved them both dearly and hope the best for his sons and their families.
