Glena “Virginia” Gregory Sample, age 88, of Webb City, Mo., passed away on Friday July 20, 2012 at Freeman Hospital, following a short illness.
Virginia was born on September 26, 1923 in Pittsburg, Ks., the daughter of the late Glenn and Lena (Robbins) Gregory. She graduated from Joplin High School in 1941. She attended Joplin Business College and received an Associates Degree in business. She worked twenty-six years for Sperry Vickers, retiring in 1978. She attended St. Paul’s United Methodist Church. She was a past member of the Camdenton Christian Church in Camdenton, Mo., where she served as a past president of the Christian Women’s Fellowship for two years. She also assisted in the arts & crafts festival, raising funds for the community. She volunteered at the St. John’s Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, and was a member of the Joplin Professional Women’s Association. She was also a member of the Ozark Brush and Palette Club.
Virginia married John Sample on September 25, 1976 in Joplin, and he survives. Additional survivors include; one daughter Sally Downey and husband Larry, Carl Junction, Mo.; one son, Gregg Campbell, Oklahoma City, Okla.; two step-sons, Rick Sample and wife Celia, Richmond, Va. and Steve Sample and wife Kelly, Eugene, Or.; one stepdaughter, Charlene Majors, San Francisco, Calif.; one brother, Don Gregory, Quartzsite, Az.; six grandchildren, Bryan Downey, Boyd Downey, Michele Downey, Vanessa Gagne, Andy Sample, and Candice Howe; four great-grandchildren, Morgan Terry, Griffin Gregory Her, Diago Cervantes, and Angela Nicole Cervantes; several nieces and nephews, and many close friends. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jeraldine Domich.
Virginia loved her husband and her family. She loved flowers, animals, making a beautiful home, shopping, dancing, and taking care of her family. She was a gifted artist, enjoyed playing the piano, and made amazing pies.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday at Mason-Woodard Chapel. Tracy Rowe, Minister, will officiate. Burial will be in Osborne Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 4-5 p.m. Sunday at the mortuary.
