Obituary for Dr. Wayne Allen Harrell

Dr. Wayne Allen  Harrell
Dr. Wayne A. Harrell, age 84, of Joplin, Mo., passed away on Saturday November 11, 2017, at Joplin Gardens, following an illness.

Wayne was born on March 22, 1933 in Kearney, Ne., the son of the late Arthur G. and Margaret (Weinle) Harrell. He served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He attended schools in Kearney, Ne. and Jefferson City, Mo. He graduated from Wichita High School East. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Wichita State University and his Ed.D. from the University of Northern Colorado. He was a music educator at Lakin, Ks., Belle Plaine, Ks., Wichita High School West, Pittsburg State University, and Missouri Southern State University. He retired from MSSU in 1995 after twenty-five years of teaching. He loved teaching and still had several horn students. He performed, taught and played golf every day up until his illness.

Wayne was a member of First United Methodist Church for forty-seven years. He taught the Tri-M Class, sang in the choir, and served on the board. He was formerly a member of the Wichita Symphony, the Springfield Symphony, and the MSSU Symphony. He was a member of MMEA, MENC, The International Horn Society, and the Lionbackers. This fall he was inducted into the MSSU Athletic Hall of Fame. He loved playing golf and watching all types of college sports.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Patsy (Liptrap) Harrell, Joplin, Mo.; one son Tim Harrell, Rocklin, Ca.; two daughters, Jane Phipps and husband Mark, Joplin, Mo., and Jill Kilpatrick and husband David, Roach, Mo.; twin brother, Wynne J. Harrell, Springfield, Mo., and brother, Ray D. Harrell, Centennial, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Erin Phipps, Joplin, Nick Phipps and wife Emily, Joplin, Kelsey Stephens and husband Eric, Raymore, Mo., Kylie Hay and husband Andrew, Republic, Mo., Katie Kilpatrick and significant other Matt Dear Columbia, Mo., Griffin Harrell and significant other Taylor Clark, San Diego, Ca., and Cameron Harrell, Rocklin, Ca.; and seven great-grandchildren, Adaline, Henry, Keegan, Kyleigh, Karlee, Avery, and Sydney. He was preceded in death by one brother, Hugh Harrell.

A Memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church. Reverend Bob Howard will officiate. The visitation will be 6-7 p.m. Monday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary.

Memorial contributions may be given to First United Methodist Church in care of the mortuary.
