Mildred M. Largent passed away Tuesday April 11, 2017 at Spring River Christian Village.
Mildred Marie Lomelino Largent was born February 20, 1928 in Liberty Missouri. Her family had moved to Liberty Missouri to allow her father and two aunts to attend William Jewel Baptist University to prepare for Baptist ministry work. At the age of eight, upon her profession of faith, Mildred was baptized by her father who later served as the Illinois Southern Baptist State Evangelist. Mildred graduated Valedictorian of her high school class in Effingham, Illinois and prepared to enter the nursing profession. During World War II, Mildred had joined the American Red Cross and maintained her membership for twenty years, receiving numerous awards for her work.
Mildred met her husband, Wilbur E. Largent, during a Baptist Young Peoples Sunday night meeting and they were married in 1947. Upon moving to Dallas, Texas Mildred raised her family and then reentered her chosen profession to complete her Bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University (Commerce) and her graduate work from the University of Texas at Arlington. In 1978, she completed the requirements to be a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner. Mildred served in this capacity for the Dallas Public Health Department for twenty-four years. Mildred designed and implemented the first health services program for the homeless and the first mobile health van in Dallas that completed full physical assessments for the indigent. Mildred’s participation in the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, Family Nurse Practitioner Guild, the Dallas Urban League, Texas Baptist Nursing Association, and other professional associations gave her many unique avenues of service. Mildred participated in a national nurse’s health study conducted by Harvard University Medical School until the time of her death.
As a child, she felt God’s leading in her life into the nursing ministry. Her church service paralleled her professional ministry through many years of teaching, Bible study, WMU, establishing Forest Park Baptist Church’s parish health ministry, and her work as president of the Baptist Nursing Fellowship.
Mildred was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed quilting and gardening. She lived by the creed “if you can’t take care of your own, you have no business trying to take care of everyone else. She also practiced and firmly believed that God was in control and nothing happens without His permission.
Mildred is survived by her husband, Wilbur Largent of Joplin, MO. her son George W. Largent and wife Mary of Loma Linda, MO., her daughter, Carolyn Dickinson and husband Alan of El Dorado, Ar. Three grandchildren: Lanell Largent Huffman and husband Howdy of Campo, CO., John Dickinson and wife Karen of San Francisco, CA., Lydia Norvell and husband Jon of Norphlet, AR. Eight great grandchildren and two great, great grandsons and one great, great granddaughter due in June of this year.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Tuesday April 18, 2017 at Forest Park Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. to service time at the church.
